Private Networking: Setup and server management

TABLE OF CONTENTS

What is a Private Network?

A Private Network allows you to connect multiple servers internally using a dedicated network interface. Servers within the same private network can communicate securely without exposing traffic to the public internet.

Before you begin

To create a Private Network, you must first purchase the Private Network Add-On for each server you want to include.

How to create a Private Network

  1. Log in to the Customer Panel at new.contabo.com.
  2. Go to Network Services → Private Networking.
  3. Click Create new Private Network.
  4. Select the servers you want to add by ticking the corresponding checkboxes.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Enter a name (and optional description) for your network.
  7. Click Confirm.

Your Private Network will now appear in the Private Networking overview.

Activate the network connection

After creating the network (or adding/removing servers), each affected server must be restarted or reinstalled to become fully connected.

In the Private Networking section, open your network and check the status label next to each server:

Requires reinstallationReinstall the OSServer is on a vHost that does not support private networks; the IP address will change and all data will be permanently deleted.

Benefits, firewall, and API

Benefits

  • Secure internal communication between Cloud VPS / VDS in the same location, without public internet exposure.
  • Automatic private IP assignment - no manual subnet calculation or IP configuration required.

Firewall
There is currently no built-in firewall for the Private Networking feature. To restrict internet access for selected servers while keeping others publicly reachable, use your operating system's local firewall.
