How Do I Change My 2-Factor Authentication Settings?

What is 2-factor authentication?

2-factor authentication is an extra layer of security that can be added to your account in the Customer Control Panel.

When 2-factor authentication is turned on, you must log in with your password and a one-time password generated by an application on your phone.

Learn how to turn this option on and off below.


How do I turn on 2-factor authentication?

  1. Install an authentication application such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator on your phone.
  2. Log in to the Customer Control Panel.
  3. Click "Customer details" from the blue control panel box on the left hand side of the page.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the section called "2-factor authentication for the customer control panel".
  5. Click the blue "Activate 2-factor authentication" button.
  6. A new window should open up with information about 2-factor authentication and a QR code. Be sure to write down the recovery code, as you will need it to access your account if you lose access to 2-factor authentication.
  7. Scan the QR code with the authenticator app on your phone. 
  8. In the authenticator app on your phone you should see an account called "my.contabo.com". Click on it and you should see a one-time generated password.
  9. Enter the one-time password generated from your authenticator app in the text box below the QR code.
  10. Check the "I confirm that I have copied and stored the recovery code at a safe place." option.
  11. Click the "Activate 2-factor authentication" button.
  12. A new window should open asking you to verify some of your account details. Please make sure that the details are correct, as these details will be used to regain access to your account if you lose access to the 2-factor authentication. If they are correct check the box next to "I confirm that the above mentioned details are correct.".
  13. Finally, click the "Activate 2-factor authentication" button.


How do I turn off 2-factor authentication?

  1. Log in to the Customer Control Panel.
  2. Click "Customer details" in the blue control panel box on the left hand side of the page.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the section called "2-factor authentication for the customer control panel".
  4. Click the blue "Deactivate 2-factor authentication" button. A new window will open that looks like this:

  5. Click the button "Deactivate 2-factor authentication". 


How do I reset my 2-factor authentication?

Resetting your 2-factor authentication means that your current 2-factor authentication will be de-activated and a new 2-factor authentication will be setup. This can be done on the same or a different 2-factor authentication app.

  1. Log in to the Customer Control Panel.
  2. Click "Customer details" from the blue control panel box on the left hand side of the page.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the section called "2-factor authentication for the customer control panel".
  4. Click the blue button "Reset 2-factor authentication".
  5. A new window should open up with information about 2-factor authentication and a QR code. A new recovery code will be generated so please make sure to note down the new recovery code. 
  6. Scan the QR code with the authenticator app on your phone. 
  7. In the authenticator app on your phone you should see an account called "my.contabo.com". Click it and you should see a one-time generated password.
  8. Enter the one-time generated password from your authenticator app into text box underneath the QR code.
  9. Check the option "I confirm that I have copied and stored the recovery code at a safe place.".
  10. Click the button "Activate 2-factor authentication".
  11. A new window should open asking you to check some of your account details. Please check to make sure the details are correct because those details will be used to regain access to your account in case you lose access to the 2-factor authentication. If they are correct check the box next to "I confirm that the above mentioned details are correct."
  12. Finally click the button "Activate 2-factor authentication".
